While the professional reviewers and interviews are the ones highlighted so often by professional musicians, my fans are most important to me. They are the heart and soul of my music.
Here are some of their comments over the years. If you’d like to add your own, please use the comment form below. I love hearing from my fans.
I love John’s music. I find it always delivers great joy and often brings me to tears. The ecstatic nostalgia evoked is often difficult to suppress…and especially his playing in the abbot’s kitchen can not be ignored. I am ever so thankful to be an Oregonian and have this spectacular talent in my back yard. Thank you for posting and thank you Mr. Doan.
Natash Vengence
John, I’d like to attend your gathering, but I am just an ole guitar player, not a harp guitarist. Maybe I could be a servant and help out. I have been in such a stressful job this last year, my music has fallen by the way. Time to pick it back up out of the dust and get fired back up. I love to play music, even though I’ll never be famous, I still like the playing of music. Plus I like hanging out with you and Deirdra.
Robert Kill – March 25, 2012
My husband took me to your performance at Corban University and it was completely inspiring and filled with adventure.. I felt as though I was in these places with the story’s you were telling us! I loved every second of this and I will share your music with others. God gave you such a wonderful talent. Thank you so much for sharing it with us!
Ralynn Lillie – February 10, 2012
Last night we viewed the Victorian Christmas here in Florida. Having been to several past performances in Salem,we were eager to share this with our hosts. Connecting the computer to the big TV was almost like being there. We had to provide our own snacks though. My friend here was born in Ireland, so John’s Irish inspired music and playing style has caught his attention. A while back when I had to use a bit of technical magic to stretch an internet connection to John’s home, I said that the Internet was going to remove the roadblocks that connect the artist to the audience. Last night I demonstrated to my skeptical friends that I was right. (Pat myself on the back)See… I told you so.
Steve Elisberg – December 19, 2011

Departures is my favorite cd by John. I’ve been trying to find the cd and have had no luck. I wish John could make a remaster release of the cd. It would sell big time.

Miguel Nardi – January 8, 2011
Just picked up your CD, ‘Eire, Isle of the Saints.’ Just amazing music, even my wife who is not much into this style of music said it was breath taking. We will play it a lot during this holiday season. Hope you make it back in this area for future concert dates.
Dave Witt – December 11, 2010
Hi John: My 8 year-old son and I love your music. We are both learning classical guitar, and would love to know if you have sheet music for your version of Amazing Grace. Thank you so much for your lovely work.

Saturday morning, raining, hot coffee, and my new Harp Guitar CD playing -“Harp Guitars Under the Stars”! I don’t think it gets any better than this. Masterful work! Thank John for another AMAZING collection of music. You bless us all!
Donna Zitzelberger – November 20, 2010
Robert received Under the Stars and I’m listening to it .. Incredible .. all of it. It looked so compact and when I sprung the CD it came alive in all ways! Numerous textures/senses all woven into one gift of art .. and I can think of several people who will love this as much as I do. Thank you all for an Angelic presentation.
Ruthie – November 19, 2010
Your music is beautiful. I just ordered your Christmas CD. I am very glad I found this website – just by chance – searching for instrumental Christmas music. God bless your talent!
Maureen Larsen – November 14, 2010
Hello Professor Doan, My name may not strike your memory or it may strike you as a blast from the past. I was a student of yours at Willamette for a couple of term about 12/13 years ago. I just wanted to drop in and let you know that your music and instrument still ceases to inspire me. I still have aspirations of finding my own Harpguitar some day…Keep an eye out for my gangly frame at one of next annual HG conferences. Blessings!
Jason Inskeep – October 21, 2010
I just wanted you to know how much I enjoy your music. I bought Celtic Odyssey about 8 years ago at a new age store not knowing anything about you or your music. I honestly just liked the title and cover art. I have been listening to it for years and am in love with it. Thank you for sharing your talent! God Bless!

Hi, I was looking for something soothing for me and my Golden Retriever to listen to and I found you. We both needed to hear something beautiful after a very rough afternoon at the vet and a sleepless night. I thought God was going to take him. We are both resting now and we are listening to some of your beautiful music. I’ve never heard of a guitarharp let alone see or hear one. I love it. It actually combines my two favorite instruments. Very peaceful John. I will have to look further into this instrument. It’s very interesting and different. Thank you for the peace and calm today.
Kathleen Villa – September 19, 2010
One of my favorite compositions was a track you did on a “guitar works”album. you also performed a lullaby. I never expected to encounter you in person in the little town of Grants Pass, OR. I was able to recognize your style without ever seeing your face. When i asked you if your name was John Doan and you said yes, it kinda blew my mind, because you had been a tremendous influence on me for my own music.
Joshua Marc Michel – September 4, 2010
My husband and I were privileged to hear John Doan perform a Celtic Pilgrimage at St.-Michael’s-by the-Sea church in Carlsbad, California last night. It was magical entertainment. Thanks to John for bringing this amazing experience to southern California.
Kristi Wells-Bevis – August 14, 2010
We saw a poster in Yreka today about your concert later this month. After listening to your music on your website we wish we could be there. Wonderful music! I am 68 years young and and have just started learning to play mandolin. First musical endeavor in my life. If you make it back to Yreka again or toward Redding, CA we would like to know.
Dusty Roan – August 13, 2010

I’m currently listening to a tape I purchased from you at a lunch concert at Portland State University sometime between 1985 and 1987, and thought I’d do a search on your name; good to see that you have prospered!

Saw you today in Carlsbad at the Dove Library. I was very moved.
Barbara McPharlin – December 13, 2009
Wow…Victorian Christmas…One of the best Christmas performances we have seen in Chico, hosted by Trinity United Methodist Church. Not only were we entertained by your musical talent but also educated in instruments we had never seen before. Also learned a thing or two about an era that valued family time in the parlor. Have a Merry Christmas!
Michael & Leslie Moller – December 12, 2009
Hello John, my wife and I have long enjoyed your music after being introduced to it by a mutual friend, Jeff Johnson. Years back, we set out from our home in San Luis Obispo County, California, to watch you play and film you in Santa Barbara. Cell phones were rare back then and we could not find the house, and the phones were turned off for your concert. We never did find it. So, we set off home with a car of camera gear, lights, and never did see you. ;o) One of these days, we are going to bring you to one of the events we help sponsor. We met with the bank yesterday to discuss a new film festival in our area, and you were the first musician we thought of to bring in for a special event. We hope that it all works out, as I still haven’t unpacked the camera gear — just kidding. It would be great to have you here and to see the crowd’s reaction to the superb and evocative melodies that you elicit from your incredible range of instruments. Bless you always, John. The beauty of your music is simply amazing.
Ron Lindeboom – November 21, 2009
John, What a delight to meet you and share a brief taste of your music at the Harp Guitar gathering in Williamsburg this past weekend. Thank you for making the trip. I hope that you and Diedra can visit again soon and enjoy the beauty and history of Virginia. We couldn’t leave the concert Sunday evening without a selection of your CDs, and I will need to order an additional copy of Wayfarer for my brother, who is now living in England. We were just discussing the idea of life as pilgrimage during his recent visit, and I know that he and his wife will treasure your CD. They have visited, or will soon visit, many of the “thin” places you have experienced. Thank you for manifesting some of the most magical and beautiful music I’ve ever experienced. We hope to hear you perform again, and look forward to a future time when our paths will cross. Peace to you and yours.
Elizabeth McCoy – November 2, 2009
My husband and I were delighted to hear you play at the community center in Coquille, OR some years ago and again in 1998 at the Methodist Church in Coos Bay,OR. Our daughter, who now plays Celtic harp, was with us at the church and very much enjoyed your music. As I was mulling over ideas for her birthday, I thought of you. We have some tapes of your playing, but no cds; she has nothing. Fortunately I was able to find your site online and to order “Songs from the Hills,” “Eire,” and the “Christmas Combo” dvd. We’re looking forward to seeing and hearing them ourselves. I saw in your bio that you’d visited the Aran Islands. In 2006 we spent 2 days on Inish More at Kilmurvy House. The only problem we had was that the time wasn’t long enough. Bless you for your work!
Florence Finnegan – October 13, 2009
thank you for the Marylhurst performance this evening. You brought my wife and I to tears performing Sor’s music, with the Death March, of course, in particular. Thank you for the photo with me, i look like an excited teenager all over again. all the best, Joe and Jamie
Joe Spencer – October 10, 2009
Thank you for teaching me guitar. I am really proud of you are my guitar lesson’s teacher. It is really awesome. By the way, i found your video on youtube. It is really impressive. i will try my best. Good luck for your concert for next week.
Unuruu – October 1, 2009
Dear Mr. Doan, I feel re-enegized back into classical music. It’s been 20 years since I’ve studied classical guitar with Bill Zito and Stephen Leanord ( both from N.Y.) I feel that buzzing feeling in my gut, again. Your playing has re-ignited a passion that has been put aside for so long. i just bought and downloaded your recording -” The Lost Music of Fernando Sor”- I love it! I feel like the Harp guitar will be my new love. I have been enjoying music for the Viole de Gamba, but I like the sensation of plucking the strings, it feels more intimate. Thank you for your incredible music! Hopefully, someday soon, I will be able to acquire and learn to play the Harp guitar.
James Garcia – September 15, 2009
I love the song “Beloved”. Today, it came on my MP3 player randomly. There have been a lot of stresses recently in my life that are just normal life issues, but there have been several all at once! ACK! When this song came on, I heard the soothing song and realized how tense I was. I suddenly saw Jesus sitting in front of me playing this beautiful song. He said to me,”I am your “David” driving away the stresses you feel.” And, all the stress lifted as this beautiful song played. Thank you for your anointed music. God is using it to bless the body of Christ. Blessings to you and yours!
Kathrine T. – July 13, 2009
Thanks to the July, 2009 Texas Monthly Magazine, I have been introduced to you and your multi-stringed instrument. I wish we lived less than 6 hours away from The Woodlands, Dosey Doe, so that we could hear you personally. Our 46-year old son also is named John Doan. Kerrville, Texas, does boast the annual Kerrville Folk Music Festival, so perhaps you will be a guest here sometime, and we can meet you and listen to your music.
Barbara Doan – June 22, 2009
Dear Mister John Doan,I Loved your talent. You are one of the most important musicien in the world. You are amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I Listen so much your music and I like.
Rodrigo Gallo, Brazil – April 30, 2009
Deirdre steered me here, knowing I love Celtic music. What a find! Please add me to your mailing list so I can hear you in person. I live in Gig Harbor, WA (about 10 miles from Tacoma and 50 miles from Seattle). Portland isn’t out of the question either — it’s about a 2.5 hour drive for the right event.
Meri Arnett-Kremian – April 23, 2009
Totally fascinating music, played skillfully my a master musician. One could easily lose one self in the myths of long ago.
Tracey Cross – April 20, 2009
John, May God continue to give you heavenly sounds to be shared with His people. It’s an honor to our King to have your music in the Shekinah House Of Prayer.
Rev. Raleigh F. Adams – April 15, 2009
On the spur of the moment my husband and I drove up to your concert yesterday. What a treat–well worth the long drive. Thank you so much for investing in the talents you were given.
Winnie Crippen – February 23, 2009
Your incredible music has moved me beyond the stars. Years ago I met an American Harpist in Galway his car had been stolen with everything he owned, money, passport, clothes. I took him for lunch, then home with me to Co. Cork he phoned his parents to say he was safe , eventually his belongings were recovered and he was able to travel home. His name was John…but I forget his surname as it was twenty years ago.
Roisin Russell – February 3, 2009
Absolutely beautiful! I will be back!
Jan – February 1, 2009
Such lovely music! I am very impressed with the feeling you instill into your music. I love all the stringed instruments and you certainly do them justice.
Nancy S. George – December 23, 2008
G’day, Your site was given to me by a friend of yours and I’m glad he did. What a wonderful place and what lovely instruments you have. Thank you. Regards, Lesley Western Australia
Lesley – December 23, 2008
John, It was great to visit with you and Deirdra Friday. Another great show! Everyone that attended your show in Oakridge were very impressed with not only your incredible music, but your message as well.
Rob DeHarppor – TDecember 7, 2008
“Farewell”, WOW…If there is a Heaven i would think that you would be a greeter to welcome home the dreamers. Seeing you was a spiritual experience.
Aaron Andersen – October 17, 2008
Greetings John, Just wanted to tell you again how much my husband and I enjoyed your music last night at the Big Top in Bayfield. Your music is elegant and beautiful but it was also your sweet and humble spirit that endeared you to us both. We look forward to enjoying more offerings from you. Most sincerely, Julie & Gary Borchert
Julie Borcher – TSeptember 6, 2008
John, It was an honor to be playing on the same program with you and Mason Williams at Dosey Doe Coffee Shop in The Woodlands, TX. I really enjoyed meeting you and getting to visit with you at the after party. I to be able to cross paths again with you someday. Thanks for your expertise and attention to excellence in music.
George Ruehle Encore Productions The Woodlands, Texas – August 29, 2008
Dear John, Tonight you did a great job with Mason Williams!!! It has been a long time since songs have moved me to tears. There is an anointing on those songs you played!!! I had such a great time talking with you and again I would love to know when you are in the Houston area and hopefully, if you have time, maybe even be in a master’s class learning under you. The Houston area is a prime spot for fingerstyle and classical guitarist and I speak on behalf of all of us in the Conroe/Houston area that we would be honored to have you come and perform in this area
Chris Chimene – August 21, 2008
Dear Mr. Doan I accidentally found you You Tube. I have never heard of you since I live on little island called Cyrus where most people listen to non-music. I have always had a great love for music and especially guitar and lute. I have heard and seen on my travels people like Segovia and John Williams, and a few others. I can not possibly compare you with them as you are so different and yet so enlightened. You gift is rare and yourpassion for music is alive and tender. For what is worth, I enjoyed your music and talent and I think people like you serve Music like a true Christian serves God. My admiration and I am grateful for your existence.
Philip de Casatn – August 17, 2008
I wanted to thank you for your great performance a few nights ago at Hugh’s Room. Your music was so interesting and we enjoyed your back and forth banter with Mason Williams. However , it was something else that inspired me to write to you. You pleasant stage manner and graciousness in thanking my husband for attending your concert, on our way out caused me to remark to my husband who is an atheist, “That man is a devout Christian.” I have never made such a comment in my life, but I had that sense about you. You wear your faith and it becomes you.
Cathy Cosgrove – July 22, 2008
Hi, I hope to hear your heavenly music live at Hugh’s room. and also hope you discover some potential match of your guitar and Persian music!
Nancy – July 6, 2008
Many years ago I helped you with an appearance at OMSI. I have been a fan ever since. Keep up the good sounds!
Tom Prewi – TTJune 26, 2008
Hi, John, Your “St. Patrick in the Faith” helped me to return to faith — I was very moved by this extraordinary piece years ago when I was at loose ends spiritually; it just brought me to tears for reasons I couldn’t understand. Just listening to it was a healing experience for me. Then I discovered that it contains part of St. Patrick’s “The Deer’s Cry”!
Tom Brisson – June 15, 2008
*Hi* John! I had the amazing and mind-blowing pleasure of hearing you play at Mike Doolin and Nancy Conescu’s wedding last weekend. (I’m a classical musician who later went back to school for theatre … I was the guest with the super-short pixie hair wearing a silver dress.) The beauty of your music moved me to tears, and I was in awe of the level of your musicianship. I also *so* enjoyed our brief conversation after your way-too-brief performance. All told, you’ve definitely acquired a new and devoted fan! I’ve already cruised through your whole website (which is fabulous!), and have ordered two CDs. I’m SO excited to have your music grace my husband’s and my home I can’t even tell you! (My husband, Colin Berry, is a writer, as well as a musician.) I’m sure I’ll be back for more! Keep up the STUNNINGLY AMAZING work! And keep spreading your healing beauty and Magic throughout the world. I feel honoured, graced, and grateful to have “discovered” your work.
Blaed Spence – May 30, 2008
A few years ago I worked in a used/new CD store and came across your CD, Eire: Isle of the Saints. I listened to it and immediately bought it. Since then, I’ve played your music while I wrote essays and studied for school. It’s a great companion for reading! But I’ve also sat and listened to it, absorbed in it all–and realized that this is one of my favorite CDs. I dabble in playing music (percussionist in high school, and I took classical guitar lessons for a while), and I wanted to let you know that listening to Eire has been enjoyable and inspiring. Kudos, John Doan. And thanks for the music!
Brandon Stovall – May 19, 2008
Hi John.. Just looking at Bob’s Blog and came across your website. I just wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed working with you. Your music touched my soul.. it’s rare to hear a melody that is so beautiful, it brings such emotion. I was swept away by the haunting quality of your beautiful harp-guitar!
Lori Brandon – May 18, 2008

Rob DeHarppor – TApril 27, 2008
Mr. Doan, Just got back from the event in Oakridge and wanted to thank you for a wonderful evening both enjoying the music as well as your being so gracious sharing your experiences in Ireland with your recording projects. Looking forward to your next concert. Best wishes, Kurt Goss
Kurt D. Goss – April 27, 2008
I wanted to thank you for offering your “Beyond 6 Strings” series. All artists were very talented and their technical ability was wonderful to experience, but your music and the quality of sound you are able to produce with the harp guitar has a depth and soul which made your performance outstanding. I first heard you play in the 80’s at Mt Angel Abbey and have had the privilege to hear you several times since then. It’s obvious that God’s love and peace shine through in your composing and performance. Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent. Janet
Janet Predeek – April 19, 2008
G’day mate! Found your music recently and love it. Beautiful playing. Just wanted to drop a note saying thanks for sharing it. 🙂

Mary Beth – February 21, 2008
I saw you in concert with Meadowlark at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts last night. I had never heard of the harp guitar, but now I am a huge fan. I was absolutely entranced by your beautiful arrangements of Christmas carols and other hymns. Thank you for sharing your incredible gift of music, your lovely stories, and your priceless instruments. I hope you can make this holiday concert an annual event.
Linda – December 22, 2007
I am listening to your Wrapped in White Christmas cd. I have had it for 15 years and it is my favorite of all times. Thank you for your beautiful music.
Suzy Peterson – December 21, 2007
When are you going to be in the Centralia, Washington area again. My family really enjoyed your concert when you played at Centralia collage.
Lorraine Pra – TTNovember 25, 2007
Found a link to you from Jeff Johnson’s site. Didn’t realize until I heard your music that I have a couple CDs you are on! Your instrument and musicianship are outstanding! I especially enjoyed the video on YouTube of “St. Patrick in the Spirit.” I play guitar a little (not very well) but I also play the wire-strung Celtic harp. Sometimes your guitar harp sounds very similar to my harp (only much better!) God bless you and your family during this season.
Jill – November 24, 2007
The first I heard of your music was “Gazing On The Face Of The Sea” playing on the radio. After that I had to get the Wayfarer CD, now I collecting all the others too. I haven’t seen your CD’s in the shops anywhere (I’m in Australia) but at least I can buy them online.
Ruth – November 24, 2007
Well, Shaun summed up nicely what I wanted to say 😉 I’ve just watched your “Ireland Celtic Movie” on Youtube for the umpteenth time and can’t wait for the CD “Eire: Isle of the Saints” I ordered to arrive. Your music just is hauntingly beautiful – thanks for the great work you’re doing! Cheers, Christine

We are having a Doan Family reunion in the village of Galahad, Alberta on July 25, 26, 27, 2008-the Lord willing! This is the family of Albert Doan (descendent of Ebenezer Doan)& Matilda Johnson. My mom (Bertha EUNICE) was the oldest in that family. I believe you met my cousin Hazel Doan Reeh. We farm in east central AB. Would love to hear your music, as I read the comments…it sounds heavenly!

Bought your album “Isle of the Saints” in Portland, O. a few years ago while visiting my son there. Especially love the Lamentation of Torlough O’Carolan. A beautiful instrument played by a skilled artist.

Your use of all of those antique instruments is absolutely fascinating. I had no idea there were so many different kinds.

I think your music is very mystic, fantastic, like music from the heaven.

John.. Your a king in the world of music and guitar. I cant get enough of Wayfarer and I am just beginning to discover the previous albums. It is not just the technical perfection of your playing, it is the beauty that resonates from it! I cant wait for more works from the maestro of twenty strings!

Saw you last week in San Diego. Haven’t ever heard of you, or hear your music, I went in with no expectations of what your music was like. Boy, was I pleasantly surprised! I (as a guitar player) have never heard anything so beautiful and pleasant. After the first song, I was silently hoping I could somehow get some of your music – – and then you said you had CDs for sale at intermission. I bought one, and my brother, who lives in San Diego and I was visiting, bought 2. I just got back from Cal (I live in North Texas), and played them for my wife – she loves it to! My mission now is to find out how to connect you with the local university, which is famous for its music, especially the jazz department, and see if we can’t get you a performance here (University of North Texas)! I’m sure the students and locals will love your music too. I’ll be keeping in touch! Until then, keep up the beautiful music!

Hello John – you have incredible musicality on top of great technicity. Music inhabits you totally when you play. I live in Geneva, Switzerland. I hope you’ll be playing there or in the vicinity someday soon. 🙂

Dear John…. Thank you for your comment on my space. You asked me to investigate about concerts or festivals in the south of France. Let me a little time to think and ask. I’ll do my best. Love and Light. Cathy

Hello Fellow Musician, I really love the instrument you play and the tunes you’ve composed. I’m a great fan of Irish music myself and really fell in love with your style of playing the slow airs and tunes. Greetings from the Lowland Paddies.
